What should I do on Scratch if I’m new?
Scratch, a website and programming platform, is a great site to visit. There are tons of fun things to do there: Make games, share ideas, communicate with other “Scratchers” as they are commonly called, and countless other activities that can result in great projects, ideas, etc.
While you can do TONS of things, probably too many to list here, I have narrowed it down to just 3 ideas if you’re just getting started:
Make a funny animation
The Scratch community is a great place to share your quick little ideas via animation. People on Scratch make short videos using the simple drag-and-drop editor. These animations tend to be comical and often quite random. This many times makes it funny.
The Scratch community will gladly accept your ideas. Animations, depending on exactly how complicated or how long you want it to be, tend to be a great way to start Scratching! Here’s an example of a great animation by a friend of mine. This animation for me, at least, represents the idea that simplicity can be hilarious, too!:

Games are cool, too!
With Scratch, making your own video game is extremely easy compared to other languages, such as Java, C++, and others. Theoretically, you could make a quick maze game in a few minutes! You can also play other people’s games, too! Some Scratchers out there put a HUGE amount of effort into their projects, and the results are often amazing. Take epninja’s latest and sadly last Scratch game, SYSTEM FORMAT: The Final Project. It’s a great game with a great storyline, and clearly took a ton of work. The result was a practically professional game. Amazing.
Always remember that the Scratch community is probably one of the nicest communities out there for beginning game makers, and with over 10 million projects and counting, there’s a giant amount of people who have honed in their Scratch skills and would love to help you!

Interact with the rest of the community!
Like I mentioned earlier, the Scratch community is probably one of the nicest communities you will ever find on the internet. Check out the forums for tons of ideas, potential programming friendships, and even collabs waiting to happen! Collabs are where multiple Scratchers work on a single project, series of projects, or an idea relating to Scratch! The possibilities are practically endless with Scratch. The community is its’ own tech support, and they’re all very nice, too!
There are so many reasons to start Scratching now, and these are just a few!
So go ahead. Check it out if you haven’t already. If you haven’t made a project yet, go and make one! Talk with the community! Explore!
